JOURNAL ENTRY: DAY 21

OK, I worked another 8-hour shift yesterday, and it was SO HOT in the store it was almost unbearable. I actually had a rather intense dizzy spell at one point; thought I was actually going to black out for a few seconds, there. It was an absolutely miserable day and I thought it would never end. My feet still hurt this morning, so I can't WAIT to go back to work in an hour! :(

BREAKFAST
'fried' egg sandwich (2 eggs, 2 skinny small slices of pepper jack cheese, 2 slices whole grain bread)

SNACK
apple
baby carrots
mixed nuts
(not much of any of them -- 5 minutes doesn't give you much time to chew!)

LUNCH
Ham and cheese sandwich (canned ham from my box o' food, pepper jack, and whole grain bread)
more apple slices

NO PM SNACK

SUPPER
Broccoli and Green onions tossed with 2 oz whole-grain spaghetti

DESSERT
1 oz dark chocolate

I know that I had a lot of carbs yesterday, with 4 slices of bread plus the pasta... not great. I will try to do better today. I have a six-hour shift, so it's going to be another snack-til-lunch/supper thing again. :(

When I left work yesterday, I was so hot, thirsty, and headache-y that I knew I wouldn't make it home without something cold to drink. I actually drove through the McDonald's drive-up window and JUST GOT UN-SWEET TEA!! Yay! Oh crap, I just figured out that that's why I didn't sleep very well last night: caffeine! Oh well, at least I didn't get any french fries or greasy cheeseburger!! :)

  1. wow nice job Mom! mcdonald's drive thru and no bad foood! too bad about the caffeine though.

how much broccoli did you have with your spaghetti? I ask just because 2 oz doesn't sound like much pasta!! How are you measuring out exactly 2 oz? I just looked up serving sizes and 2.5 oz is a "small serving" and only 87 calories.. 5 oz is a "medium serving" and about 174 calories. You could eat a little more and be ok! I worry you're actually not eating enough sometimes.

A serving of whole grain bread or pasta for each meal isn't a bad thing. if you were eating white bread and white pasta all day that might be bad.. but 2 sandwiches and that teeny tiny bit of pasta you had shouldn't worry you.

  2. Rachel already said what I was going to comment on, but I'll just chime in anyway and agree: Great Job at the drive-thru!, don't worry too much about carbs as long as they're whole grain, and I too sometimes wonder if you're eating enough. If you feel hungry more often than every 3ish hours, you're probably not. Also, I know you're already a big water drinker, but are you sure you're drinking enough throughout the day? Especially if it's hot at work and you're walking around more, you should be consuming more water than a 'normal' day. Also, as refreshing as it can be, tea is a diuretic, so if you're really thirsty, tea is probably not the best choice, especially combined with the caffeine. (not saying it was a bad choice, it's awesome that you got unsweetened tea and no junk food!). Maybe a stop at a grocery store instead on days like this? My favorite refreshing beverage on days when I feel like this is infused water. There's a brand called Metro that has mint combos like citrus-mint or cherry-mint. There's no sugar or anything, and I'm pretty sure it's all natural, and the water and mint combo is super refreshing.

  3. I think the 2 oz is measured when pasta is dry, and it is a normal serving size if you are having other things with your pasta dish. Probably if you're only eating pasta with veggies, you could up the amount of pasta no problem. ok, I'm checking out for a couple days, since I'm going to San Antonio for my teaching exams, not sure if i'll be online at all, can't wait to catch up when I get back!

  4. Wow, I hit the Trifecta today!! All three of you commented on one post! Yahooo! :)

    You guys are awesome.

Yes, I measured the pasta dry in my trusty little scale. The serving size on the box says 2 oz dry, so that's what I went with. It may be that that is supposed to be a side dish-sized serving; I definitely felt like I could have eaten more.

Water. I thought about buying a bottle of water at McD's instead of the tea, but it just pisses me off to a) pay 2 bucks for a bottle of water, and b) buy a plastic bottle in the first place, so I went with the tea. I hadn't thought about the diuretic thing, though. Thanks for the reminder. I have my bottle of water in the back room, but there is no source to refill it, and I have to nurse it throughout my shift to last the whole day. I could seriously use more water at work (they're supposed to be fixing the a/c today!! Hallelujah); guess I need to get a bigger water bottle (like a gallon??). I will definitely check out the Metro brand -- I LOVE the mint-citrus idea!!

In other news, I think next week when I get my paycheck, I'm going to have to squander some money on another pair of pants... the ones I got for work are getting a bit loose, and I'm hitching them up all the time. :) :) :) :) :) They're also frumpy as hell, because apparently plus-size clothing designers think that because you've got a ... um, generous derriere, you must have legs the size of sequoias, right down to your ankles. Ugh. Anyway, so that's kind of exciting.

OK, I just got home from work and there's an avocado and cucumber sandwich screaming my name right now.

Thanks again for all the input! Anybody have any ideas on combatting a sore throat and ringing ears? I guess I'm going to have to gargle, and I THINK I have some Throat Coat tea (I hope)... we'll see if that helps. I forgot how much fun it is to work in close proximity to little germ factories who are sneezing all over the shoes you're about to ring up. I woke up this morning with a hellacious sore throat, had it all day, and now my ears are ringing... had a dizzy spell both yesterday and today; don't know if it was the heat or if I'm coming down with something. :( I can't be sick -- gotta get another job ASAP!! Suggestions and comments welcome, as always!

    Love to all. xoxo

  5. YAY for the baggy pants!!!!! Congratulations!!!!!
as for the sore throat, etc.: Did you bring some echinacea with you from SC? It's probably too late now, but for future reference....
I'm sure you are caught between a rock and a hard place:not much food and no money to buy any more. As with your daughters, I have also been concerned about whether or not you are eating enough. That may be another reason you were close to passing out, besides the unbearable heat. Hang in there. Less than a week until payday, such as it is.

    Love you,
    Kathie

  6. Thanks, Kathie. I do not have any echinacea, but I should probably lay in a supply, especially if I'm going to be working in close proximity to germ incubators. :)

I have enough food now, and at this point it's just a matter of better planning.

    Thanks for the note, Kath!
